Update as of 1/31/21:As much as I desire not to have to write this update, I must, for the shoes are surely flawed in design.I’m very disappointed, for seemingly all else about the boots is excellent. I’ve gone into detail below, and yet it is fairly all for naught, if in less than two months of relatively light wear, such a significant area of wear and failure is revealed.Would that they had caught this and remedied it. Perhaps they did in later models, and as this is a cycle or two old, I fear my review won’t account for all that much.Even so, faithfully do I update my post, if even one other might benefit.I’d love to hear from the company, and a replacement would surely be in order. Even an upgrade at this point to a newer model.1 star is my final rating.Update as of 11/24:Just 45 days or so into the shoes... and they have holes wearing into the back of the collar around ankle. If this were a pair of under $50, I would be displeased, yet not surprised perhaps. But for a $130 pair of boots (even as I paid only $85 for them), I was entirely surprised and grieved. The rest of the shoes are in near new (if a bit dirty) condition, and yet it looks like I've worn these for 500-1000 miles already. In truth, my number is surely under 150, and much of that simple road walking, not serious wear and tear. The good news was that Amazon honored my complaint with a replacement pair. Thank you Amazon! Yet I am not altogether heartened, for it doesn't seem to be a defect, but rather the design. Only time will tell, and I felt it appropriate to update the review. Right now is at 4 stars. If the holes occur again in this second pair, the review will have to go down to 1 star, for the rest won't matter if an integral part of the boot falls apart in less than 2 months.***End Update***From the moment I put these on my feet, not only was there a smile on my face, but surely my feet were quite happy as well. This is such a surprise, anymore, in this day an age where quality seems quite hard to come by and compromise is more the rule. Almost like they were custom fit.I really don't feel I compromised at all with these shoes. As for fit, I wear 11.5d and I'd say they were exactly that. Perfectly to expectation.I also love the quick lace system for so many reasons. First, they do an excellent job of securing the boots on my feet. I was wondering how this would work, especially as I "wore them in" on runs or bike rides. What I found was that the secure fit system really does an excellent job out of the gate. Generally I don't need to readjust them along the way.On top of that, the other benefit comes to the fore, for if indeed an adjustment is desired along the way, it is such a simple and quick thing to accomplish. No more having to unlace entirely and retie. Simply bend over and make a quick nudge tighter or looser, then right back to it.The only sad ones in my house are my housemate's cats who always delighted to “help me” tie my previous pair of shoes. Now they stare their sad looks at me and wonder why I was so cruel to deprive them of our play... lol. They’re getting over it.The comfort overall is truly great. I used these as runners, riders and all-arounders primarily. Each of these was a peculiar test, especially considering the tread, and yet they perform admirably in all.For walking, running, hiking, they’re simply great. I even use them a good bit on pavement, especially as my first three miles is a run or ride out to the trails. I was not sure if they wouldn’t offer some “negative feedback” that would be unpleasant, and yet a testimony to their quality is that they remain comfortable even so. Riding the mountain bike was another curiosity, as to whether or not the tread would “take” to the pedals, and while at first I was a bit concerned, they have become fast friends and I believe they will get along well for some time to come.As for all-arounders, they are so well constructed, I have not fear that I will deprive myself of span of life with them by the extra work I put them through. I think the tread, after a good long while, will surely go long before the shoes themselves. In the end, these shoes are exactly what I had truly hoped for. Comfortable. Durable. Versatile. Quality construction. Oh, and they look pretty good as well. (All black)Will update if anything changes, but as I got these on sale for around $81, I consider them a tremendous deal and one of the best footwear purchases I’ve made in the last decade. Truly I have been searching for quality shoes, and these Salomons have met me right where I asked them to.
